HOW TO: Record Your Desktop

Tuesday
Mar 11,2008

Another simple tutorial post from me.

So, have you ever wanted to record your desktop to create video tutorials, or to show off your desktop to your friends on Youtube? recordMyDesktop is a simple and easy application for these desktop recording and I have been using it since forever!

recordMyDesktop is a desktop session recorder that attempts to be easy to use, yet also effective at it’s primary task. As such, the program is separated in two parts; a simple command line tool that performs the basic tasks of capturingand encoding

To install recordMyDesktop, we start with typing the following to the terminal:

adamz@Ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install recordmydesktop gtk-recordmydesktop

Now you have two ways to use recordMyDesktop:

  • Terminal
  • GUI

To use it through terminal just type the following:

adamz@Ubuntu:~$ recordmydesktop

recordMyDesktop will start capturing and once you’re done press Ctrl + C

and the video file will be stored in your /home/username/ directory.

If you prefer to use the GUI, go to Applications > Sound & Video > gtk-recordMyDesktop

From there you can record your desktop straight away, to stop the recording just click on the white box on your system tray.

The default video output will be in OGG format. Though you can convert it to AVI using mencoder. You can install it by typing the following on your terminal:

adamz@Ubuntu:~$ sudo aptitude install mencoder

Once you’re done installing mencoder you can start converting your OGG file to AVI format using the following:

adamz@Ubuntu:~$ mencoder -idx ogg_format_filename.ogg -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -o new_avi_format_filename.avi

Hope it’s useful :)

I’m going to start writing simple Linux tutorials for my own references because I have a bad memory when it comes to these simple things and I’m just so lazy to surf for it over and over again. If you think it’s useful for you then do use them and leave me a comment or something. Today’s post is about Alien. (nope not those UFO aliens, or weird-o type of people that SOME of you refer to as ‘aliens’)

If you’re using Ubuntu and you have RPM files that you wish to install and want to change it’s format to .deb debian package, then you’ll need to use alien. Alien is a program that converts between rpm, dpkg and slackware tgz file formats.

To install it simply go to your terminal and type:

adamz@Ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install alien

To use alien type the following on your terminal:

adamz@Ubuntu:~$ sudo alien -k rpm_file_name.rpm

And it will convert your .rpm file to .deb format. This might take a while depending on the size of your file.

To install deb files type the following on your terminal:

adamz@Ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg -i deb_file_name.deb

And your deb file will be installed.

Yea so I haven’t been writing so much lately. I’m sorry for that but real-life seems messed up and it needed some fixing. Not to mention that I had the fucking worse 2 months of my entire life and career. Having loss everything that I’ve worked for 2 years made me almost a crazy MOFO. So I had to go away for awhile just for the sake of taking a LONG deep breath and clear all the bad experiences that happened out from my poor little brain. I tell you guys I seriously don’t think I can just forget about it and move on but heck I actually did. I’ve finally moved on and I’m ready to try again from scratch only to know that I’ve gotten wiser now. It will be the last I promise.

I’m 100% sure that no one knows what I’m talking about right now but dude that’s the whole point! haha. Let it just be the ones that knows about it knows and keep it to themselves.

The real reason why I’m writing this post is because I want to share with you guys my latest desktop screenshot. Yeap! I’ve finally used Windows Vista and as much as I hate to say this, It’s been doing quite well for me. (ARGH!) Though I hated a few features of Windows Vista, such as the ask permissions to perform tasks. I find it rather annoying. And not to mention that Vista eats a lot of resources but I guess that’s normal. As for compatibility issue for 3rd Party software’s, so far the only problem I had was when I was trying to install Nero 6 and apart from that there seems to be no other problems, yet. So again, as much as I hate (really really hate) to say this, overall I’m impressed (NOOO! smack my head!)

Some of the features that I like on Vista worth mentioning are Vista AERO, the sidebar widget and the medium size icons. AERO is actually somewhat cool. I know that Compiz has more effects and 10 million times cooler than AERO (Compiz rules!), but I think for a Windows operating system that eats resources like a pig, it’s enough for me. I love the sidebar widget simply because I get to see the weather report, nothing more. ahaha! =P Sediakan jacket sebelum hujan you know!

So my conclusion for the whole Vista story is, overall I’m satisfied with it and I would indeed recommended it to any novice users but simply because it’s WAY easier to use than XP. Even though sometimes it’s just straight up annoying and graphically, I still love Linux & Compiz no matter what. hehe!

Hence I introduce you my new desktop screenshot!

Sim Tower is addictive

Here’s my screen shots. (Click for larger view =)

Well as you can see I might not be as good as you think, but who cares as long as I’m having fun.

I’m also addicted to Facebook’s Knighthood. Though somehow the creator’s server is SO damn slow that it takes ages to even do 1 little thing. I’d post a link for you guys but then TOO BAD the bloody server’s down again. Please get yourselves a better server dudes cuz I need to play them games. =)

So, anyone’s into Family Guy? Yea well my friends all said that it’s kind of old but hey took me like a week or so to finish up downloading them from Season 1 to Season 6. Somehow I’ve been into it alot. And I’ve been watching on a daily basis. haha. I’m addicted to silly funny stupid things. So I was thinking if you’ve got anything that I’m into then provide me with more infos man? man? man? (no, it’s not a typo)

Ah yea how’s work you say? We’ll I’m trying to slow things down now since I plan to move to somewhere. I’ve 3 on-going projects left and which 1 of them is almost done after almost a year’s of development and 2 more should be done in a week or so.

“Moving” is a big word for me, though everything is still unclear but I’m beginning to believe that it’s worth trying something new right now. The past few months I’ve been thinking back about all the things I’ve done and the problems that I’ve ran into and I’m kind of tired of doing what I’m doing now. I find it really hard to focus on things that matters (especially in the business side of things). Self confidence is one thing. Somehow I’m having trouble to find back that self-confidence “magic” that I use to have.(ceeeeeeewah! hehe) OR most probably I’m just too tired and need a vacation ni? hahaha. Now there’s a decision to make and it’s all in a matter of days to make up my mind. WISH ME LUCK! ehehehehe (laugh like Peter Griffin). Anyway, thanks for reading my crap =)
